what to do with speakup when starting gnome

Hi.

Except for killing speakup in the GUI console, you don't need to do
anything. Be aware that using startx will cause speakup to read a lot
of data that can't be easily stopped because you aren't in the console
that is talking when the X server starts.

When I still used startx, i created an .xinitrc file in my home dir with
the options and commands for my session. If you typed the name correct,
then you need to realize that Xsession has an upper case X.

If you just want to use a GUI login for Gnome, and you're running
Debian, just

apt-get install gdm

Since gdm beeps when it's ready for login, I haven't found booting to a
GUI login to be a problem.

Hope this helps.
