Ctrl-G: Now you hear it, now you don't

Dear Friends:

Over the past few years of using grub, I've always tried to get an
indication of when the grub screen is on screen by placing a Ctrl-G in
the title of my various stanzas in grub.conf.

This works, but not on all systems, and I would like to understand why.
The very same grub version will work on one box, but not another. I
don't get it.

And, it's not that Ctrl-G is disabled. I have a Sun W1100Z where I can
clearly hear a beep by pressing down arrow while the system is still in
bios screens. But, as soon as grub is up, the Sun box goes silent.

If you have an clues, I'd dearly love to hear them.
