I don't understand "being detected originally." When, and under what circumstances, is "originally?" When you boot? Or weeks ago before you tried "fixing" your installation? Also, "seem to remember" is not easily supported with solid advice. We'd need some better data to do anything with that. However, this much can be said: If the snd driver doesn't show up with lsmod, it ain't gonna sing for you.
