suppressing X when booting debian sarge

Hello again,
How do I prevent the xdm and xprint from starting when I boot? If I want
to run X I'd prefer to use startx. I looked in the debian-reference but
was a bit baffled by the suggestions. I actually tried one of them but it
appeared to have no affect.
