Vim help

Escape to make sure you are in command mode. 
:q!

Help,
I cannot get out of vim.
I get it to say 
type:quit<enter>
and I type quit and press enter, but it does not work.
I try F1, but it cannot find the help file.
I would rather not re-boot now.
