What version of linkx 2.1 are you using?  It's up to pre 17 now.

Elinks is a C program and doesn't use any java.  It does use
spidermonkey which is Mozilla's javascript inturpreter, but that's a C
program.  I personally don't know of any console browser that needs
Java.
