OTOH du should be used to tell how much space the files and directories within a directory use. I.E. when I do "du -h" in my home dir I find out how much space my home directory is using. When I do "df -h ." I find out how much of the file system containing the current directory is being used and how much is free. Check the man pages to find out what all the options do.
