-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all. For a while now, I've noticed that my server's cpu temperature is very high, and if the machine is rebooted, I get that high-low alarm beep from my pc speaker before the lm_sensors kernel modules kick in, and shut off that annoying beep. Wanting to do some experiments, I have for about 3 times now shut down the machine for about 6 hours at a time, to let it cool down. If the machine is turned on in the morning for example, the cpu temperature readings are at about 93-95 F, and the temperature inside the case is usually between 85-90 F. If I check in the evening, these readings stay about the same. However, if I check again on the morning of the next day, leaving the server to run over night of course, the cpu temperature readings are way high as shown below, and they stay in this high range until I power the machine down again for another cool down period. root at linserver:/home/greg# sensors -f w83782d-i2c-0-2d Adapter: SMBus PIIX4 adapter at 5000 Algorithm: Non-I2C SMBus adapter VCore 1: +2.06 V (min = +1.93 V, max = +2.14 V) VCore 2: +1.50 V (min = +1.93 V, max = +2.14 V) +3.3V: +3.24 V (min = +3.13 V, max = +3.45 V) +5V: +5.11 V (min = +4.72 V, max = +5.24 V) +12V: +11.70 V (min = +10.79 V, max = +13.19 V) - -12V: -12.29 V (min = -10.90 V, max = -13.21 V) - -5V: -5.07 V (min = -4.76 V, max = -5.26 V) V5SB: +5.04 V (min = +4.72 V, max = +5.24 V) VBat: +2.54 V (min = +2.40 V, max = +3.60 V) fan1: 4753 RPM (min = 3000 RPM, div = 2) fan2: 0 RPM (min = 3000 RPM, div = 2) fan3: 0 RPM (min = 3000 RPM, div = 2) temp1: +126?F (limit = +140?F, hysteresis = +122?F) sensor = thermistor temp2: +170.6?F (limit = +140?F, hysteresis = +122?F) sensor = PII/Celeron diode ALARM temp3: +87.8?F (limit = +140?F, hysteresis = +122?F) sensor = thermistor vid: +2.05 V alarms: Chassis intrusion detection ALARM beep_enable: Sound alarm disabled eeprom-i2c-0-50 Adapter: SMBus PIIX4 adapter at 5000 Algorithm: Non-I2C SMBus adapter Memory type: SDRAM DIMM SPD SDRAM Size (MB): 128 eeprom-i2c-0-51 Adapter: SMBus PIIX4 adapter at 5000 Algorithm: Non-I2C SMBus adapter Memory type: SDRAM DIMM SPD SDRAM Size (MB): 128 eeprom-i2c-0-52 Adapter: SMBus PIIX4 adapter at 5000 Algorithm: Non-I2C SMBus adapter Memory type: SDRAM DIMM SPD SDRAM Size (MB): 128 root at linserver:/home/greg# Note that the fans I have in this system are not powered by being attached to the motherboard like the cpu fan is, so that's why there are no readings for the speed of fan 2 and 3 in the above. Also, the lmsensors library is reporting the temperature readings correctly, I do get the same exact readings for all 3 sensors in my bios's pc health status screen. This machine has an Abit be6-II motherboard, and the cpu is a retail (as opposed to OEM) Intel P-III 600 MHz, running at 100 MHz fsb, in a slot1 socket. Does anyone have an idea of what is going on? I would suspect the cpu fan, but that seems to be running at 4753 rpm according to the above readings. While I have no way of physically determining if the cpu fan is still spinning after 24 hours of the machine being on, I have been able to verify by opening the case that the cpu fan is actually spinning when the machine is first powered on. I would get another cpu fan, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to find slot1 processors, or fans for them being still sold anywhere today. So, at the least, I'd be looking at a new motherboard with a new cpu, or at the most, building a whole new server, which I can't afford right now. Also looking at VCore 2: +1.50 V (min = +1.93 V, max = +2.14 V) from the above reading, I see that it seems to be lower then the min value. I don't know what Vcore 2 provides power to in the system, but could this be an explanation for the eventually high cpu temperatures? BTW, this box will be having its fifth birthday in January 2005. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
