Minor corrections: It turned out the list was not down, but had been blocked by my email service for about 24 hours. The information about the extra keystroke echoing came from a conversation on the speakfreely list, not on the speakup list. The suggestion made there was to check the environment variable "LANGUAGE" to be sure it has the value "C".
