Thank you. i am glad it was something obvious - even iff I missed it. I created an aumixrc file and now sound plays, but only for a few seconds. Then it stops until I press a key on the numpad. It seems very strange, but this is all so new... I know I have a lot of reading to do, and I suspect I have some sound configuring to do in Gnome.
