Unless you *really* want to use an initrd, if you are building a kernel for your and only your use then you probably don't need to worry with one. The purpose of an initrd as far as I know is to let distributions build kernels with everything including the kitchen sink built as modules to support the widest variety of hardware. Check out the lilo.conf and make-kpkg man pages to see how to set things up to use an initrd. And see the mkinitrd man page to see how to make an initrd image.
