I'll bet that soon enough there will be some company making Linux drivers for their USB to serial adapters. Basically what I'm noticing is that the state is buying laptops for $700, which is cheap, and so they won't cough up another $1300 for one with a serial port reguardless of wether I need it or not.Since this is something I would use for school, I can't argue the linux thing too well either since I'm going to need ie for most of the student login sites for classes, and I'll need word for writing papers and several other things along those lines. Linux works perfectly for me for almost everything, but those are the two things that it does not do well, and I guess since the state is paying for all of this I can't argue it too much, though I'd still like to make it a duel boot system:p but I can't really do that with no serial port, heh Oh well, I'm done ranting:) On Mon, 19 Jan 2004, Charles Crawford wrote: > Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2004 21:21:00 -0500 (EST) > From: Charles Crawford <ccrawford at Starpower.net> > Reply-To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux. > <speakup at braille.uwo.ca> > To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux. <speakup at braille.uwo.ca> > Subject: Re: speakup and usb to serial converters > > Argue that the serial port is an accomodation to your disability under > Secs 504 and 508. Del has dropped all serial ports on their laptops, and gateway is right behind them. As near as I can tell, pretty much all of the newer macs also do not have that serial support. > > > > The only way I can see around that problem is have a sited person go through the install, and then use software speech with speakup. They get some sort of deal through del, so that's who they go with. Unfortunately the machine won't have a serial port... > > On Mon, 19 Jan 2004, Kirk Reiser wrote: > > > > > Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2004 17:00:41 -0500 > > > From: Kirk Reiser <kirk at braille.uwo.ca> > > > Reply-To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux. > > > <speakup at braille.uwo.ca> > > > To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux. <speakup at braille.uwo.ca> > > > Subject: Re: speakup and usb to serial converters > > > > > > I cannot see how speakup could work with a USB to serial converter > > > unless the USB port happened to be exactly what a standard uart > > > provided in exactly the same place.
