I'll bet that soon enough there will be some company making Linux drivers
for their USB to serial adapters.

I tried seeing if gateway would sell me a laptop with a serial port, their
response was "sure, for $2000." Basically what I'm noticing is that the
state is buying laptops for $700, which is cheap, and so they won't cough up
another $1300 for one with a serial port reguardless of wether I need it or
not.Since this is something I would use for school, I can't argue the linux
thing too well either since I'm going to need ie for most of the student
login sites for classes, and I'll need word for writing papers and several
other things along those lines. Linux works perfectly for me for almost
everything, but those are the two things that it does not do well, and I
guess since the state is paying for all of this I can't argue it too much,
though I'd still like to make it a duel boot system:p but I can't really do
that with no serial port, heh

Oh well, I'm done ranting:)

and gateway is right behind them. As near as I can tell, pretty much all
of the newer macs also do not have that serial support.

through del, so that's who they go with. Unfortunately the machine won't
have a serial port...
