speakup and usb to serial converters

I've had several people ask me if speakup will work with usb to serial converters. Since I don't exactly know the answer to this, i figured I would ask here.

If it does not work with theese devices, would there be a way to get it to work with them? The reason I ask is because a lot of the laptops I'm seeing lately are removing serial ports from their laptops, or the price for a laptop with a serial port is insanely high, and by that I mean around $1600 to $1800. For some people that's not a bad price, but when you compaire it to 800 for simple small laptops, that's expensive.

If someone could give me feedback on this, I would greatly appreciate it.. Thanks!
