mass storage problem somewhat fixed

I'm assuming you have to mount the drive before you can use it.  If
that be the case, are you unmounting it before disconnecting it? I
would hesitate to simply power off the device since USB seems to be so
big on hot plug and unplug.  My background with USB devices is quite
thin right now so I could be wrong here.
