imbalanced audio channels

I am looking for ideas:

My sblive sound card seems to be producing greatly imbalanced
output in left and right channels, with the left about 4 or 5 dB
less than the right. This is true on all sound sources I have
been able to test, including numerous realaudio streams produced
with trplayer. The result is not only evident when listening to
the speaker output, but also when recording the sound to a stereo
wav file. The problem is, I cannot seem to find any mixer
controls affecting channel balancing. I can compensate with a
speaker balance control, but the recorded wav files remain
grossly imbalanced.

Anybody have any experience with this, or have any suggestions?
