Hi all,
I did a little research and managed to figure out jumper manipulation. And I am pleased to say that I was successful in switching my hd from a slave to a master, and to get linux to identify both of the cd drives at the same time.

If nothing else, undertaking this project to convert an old pc to a linux box has taught me quite a bit about hardware. *grin*

The only thing I'm still uncertain about is the word "error" in reference to hda, during the bootup sequence. Below is the a copy of the output that refers to hda.
**********************

hda: attached ide-disk driver.
hda: task_no_data_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: task_no_data_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
hda: 10018890 sectors (5130 MB) w/418KiB Cache, CHS=623/255/63, UDMA(33)
