Igor, Try: echo "[:ver speak]" >/dev/ttys0 Linux may be trying to replace the [ or ]? Enclosing it in quotes may help. Yes, I pulled the command straight out of the manual and tested on my system (Win NT 4). Sorry I couldn't provide more definative answers. Cecil
