Forgive me, but it still sounds to me like you're confusing email address with relaying mail server. Let's take an extreme example, and say that I can relay all my outgoing mail through your machine, concerto.rednote.net, by using a username/password pair to authenticate myself like you do. Now, even if I used the from address of greg at romuald.net.eu.org, and sent my mail to this list via concerto.rednote.net, the message should still get there. In fact, I know from experience when authenticating with another mail server I have access to, that this is in fact correct.

As for mailing lists allowing you to post only from the machine you subscribed from, I have not yet heard of such a practice, which I think would be highly restrictive and insane, and which would make me think long and hard about if I did, or didn't want to be on a list where such a practice was being used. Perhaps, if I considered the list to be very important to me, I would subscribe, but that's a very big if. Anyway, we're beating a dead horse now, since I can get mail through to the list, and the problem turned out to have been my mutt/gpg setup all along, and not through what machine my mail gets to this list.
