Use the command:

locate

It sources a database that's built nightly using the updatedb command.


This is Fedora, right? The same tools exist elsewhere, but the
incantations may be slightly different. Generic command is slocate, I
believe.

Change the PS strings in your $HOME/.bashrc. Consult a bash prompt HOWTO
to learn the details. For an example, here's mine:

PS1="[\u@\h \t] \W\\\$"

Yes, I like to have the time displayed when my prompt is displayed.
