Its been a while since I installed my Gentoo system, so this might not work. try the following: insert the livecd. at the boot prompt, type: gentoo speakup_synth=ltlk You may need to add speakup_ser=x where x is whatever port the synth is on, starting from 0 (com1 under dos or windows).
