reverting from Alsa?

Hi folks,
Well, since Speech Dispatcher isn't cooperating with me at the present, I've decided ot go with Yasr and the software Dectalk speech server. I got that to work, but probably because of the OSS drivers for my sound chip, the quality of the Dectalk speech sounded like it had been sampled to half its original value with a lot of aliasing. As such, I decided to try getting Alsa running on here again. I followed the instructions found at
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?module=maestro3
And everything seemed to install properly. However, issuing commands like
amixer set Master 100 unmute
and
amixer Set PCM 100 unmute
do nothing, and turning up the volume controls to maximum in alsamixer doesn't change anything. I'm guessing that something isn't configured correctly, so I want to try again. If I do a "make clean" from the drivers, library, and utilities directory, is there a chance that my OSS drivers will re-assert themselves until I can find out what's going wrong? Bad-sounding audio is better than none, after all.
Regards
Steve
