Hi Gene and everyone, Nice job on the mini-howto, Gene. I am rebuilding my root partition after foolishly allowing "apt-get -f -m dist-upgrade" to overfill it. Many files were gone, but I was able to recover much of my configuration in '/etc'... except for the contents of my /etc/modutils directory. It's a good way to get familiar with the directory hierarch and what makes things tick... Anyway, I've built a new kernel version 2.4.22 with everything the way I want it. Now I'm installing alsa v0.9.6. I did it the way I've alway done it (same as you have outlined in your mini-howto) and the modules all seem to load properly. The problem is when I try to run (as root) either alsamixer or amixer (which are there in hte path), I get the following error: >>-- begin error message --<< <1>Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000 printing eip: c010eb6b *pde = 00000000 Oops: 0000 CPU: 0 EIP: 0010:[<c010eb6b>] Not tainted EFLAGS: 00010097 eax: ce988d88 ebx: ce988d84 ecx: 00000000 edx: 00000003 esi: ce24e240 edi: 00000001 ebp: ce959f2c esp: ce959f14 ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Process amixer (pid: 819, stackpage=ce959000) Stack: cc6e0b20 ce24e240 ce988c00 ce988d88 00000286 00000003 ce988d4c d082b5a5 ce958000 00000286 ce988d5c cbc5afa0 ce988d5c cbc5afa0 d082ce36 ce988c00 ce24e240 00000000 cbc5afc0 ce988d5c ce24e240 ce6d0bc0 c12c62a0 ce7039a0 Call Trace: [<d082b5a5>] [<d082ce36>] [<c012c4d4>] [<c012b575>] [<c012b5c3>] [<c0106bd3>] Code: 8b 01 85 45 fc 74 4e 31 c0 9c 5e fa c7 01 00 00 00 00 83 79 Segmentation fault >>-- end of clipped error message --<< these are from the alsa-utils-0.9.6.tar.bz2 as weel as the 0.9.6 driver and lib packages. I got no erors\rs when config'ing, making, maki\e installing the packeages. Anybody got an idea what's happening here? Maybe you could add a section to your mini-howto, Gene... "Error messages and their solutions" TIA for any suggestions... --terry On Wed, Sep 24, 2003 at 10:03:52AM -0500, Gene Collins wrote: > Hello everyone. I've updated my ALSA howto.
