You can, if you have another cd-rom drive in your system. I use cdrdao
for audio cd's instead of cdrecord.

If your cd-rom is /dev/cdrom, and your cd-writer is /dev/cdrecorder,
the following works for me.
cdrdao copy --driver generic-mmc --source-device /dev/cdrom 
Your mileage may very.
