You could make eth1 a bridge, therefore it would not require an ip address but should, if I understand it right, still be able to assign ip addresses to that interface, I think that's what the man-page means by a non-broadcast address. The reason I've looked at this is because that's what I want to do, as I have an internal 4-port hub that's seen as eth1, i.e. it only registers as one interface to the kernel.
