The Speakup Modified boot.iso image will get you into a rescue mode, if the system in question can boot from cd rom. Or, the old Debian installer disk gives you an option for rescue mode from floppy. This is the disk for Woody that Frank Carmickle built some time ago using the 2.4.17 kernel.
