Yes. Gnome is an X desktop, so you need a working X setup before you can use any GUI desktop like KDE or Gnome. I made sure I had X working before I installed Gnome. Btw, it was easy to get DVD playback working by just telling the player to use the X interface to the video card. I just start the player from a run dialog in Gnome. I use ogle because it supports DVD navigation. It has keyboard shortcuts for most everything. You won't get any feedback from Gnopernicus, but that's not a problem.
