I just figured out that zinf can handle either alsa or ess sound protocols. So far as I can determine after having removed the id3 pieces from the system and doing a rebuild the command line interface looks perfect when doing a play of the test file, but there's only silence from the sound card. The play utility will play .wav files on this system no problem at all though.
