Another way to get tin to know what the name of your news server is (and
the method I use) is to export NNTPSERVER (all caps) to your environment.
I.E.
export NNTPSERVER=news.softcon.com
Then run rtin and everything's just fine.
Saves mucking about with config files, and if you put it in your .profile
then you doen't have to remember to type it.  This is the method I use,
and have never had a problem.  Hope this helps.
