zipspeak & U S B keybord

I still have not tried linux, so I don't know the first thing about
compiling.

Hi, it sounds as if the zip speak kernel doesn't have USB and USB keyboard
support compiled in.
I don't use zipspeak so my info could be wrong, but you may need to compile
a kernel with USB keyboard support.
