please help with sound editing

Hello all.

I am currently using arecord to record an interview I did off of tape.

Unfortunately, this interview was recorded on one of those Memorex record-on-only-once heavy duty tapes, which had something else recorded on it before.
As a result, I've got this quiet background of the previous recording, which is also only voice.

My goal is to try to minimize this background voice as much as possible, and to also try to get rid as much as possible of the sound of the tape recorder's motor (since I was using the internal microphone).

I got and compiled gramofile, but it looks like that's mostly meant for records.

I am recording this at 2250 HZ mono, with the goal of turning it into an ogg file when all is done.

Any suggestions/hints/whatever else would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Greg
