redhat 8.0 speakup and vmware, a success story

Hi all,

Thanks to Bill Acker's help last night, I was able to fix the problems I was
having with speakup in my newly created redhat 8.0 installation.

It is perhaps an unusual setup, so I thought I'd let everyone know that it
works well.
I have a pc with windows xp pro running on it (I know windows is a nasty
word, but my company requires it).
I am running vmware 3.2 on it, and I created the redhat 8.0 virtual machine
with 2 serial ports and bridging network support.

When I first talked with Bill, I couldn't get speakup to work in my
installation even though the installation spoke fine. While I don't remember
all the steps we followed, after using the installation cd's to perform a
rescue and getting into the installation as root, we modified lilo.conf and
added the necessary parameters for starting speakup, and when I rebooted all
worked fine.

On to adding braille support today.

Thanks again Bill.
