Hitting the left bracket will toggle whether inlines without an ALT string will be shown or not. I am sure you can also set it permanently, but I don't remember how to do it. "Inlines without an alt string" is the term that Lynx uses to describe a picture like you are describing which usually serves no purpose other than decoration and thus, has no "alt" tag associated with it to provide textual information.
