My understanding of it was that khttpd is an in-kernel http server, that is, it sort of replaces apache rather than speeding it up. If you want to speed apache up though you should look at squid's web accelerator support, which you will find much more stable and mature. even the kernel folks can't decide which of httpd, Tux, or nothing at all is a better kernel based http server, so i don't think the whole project is meant to be taken very seriously at this point.
