Hi charlie,
http://www.gentoo.org

Gentoo is a source based distro. This is the biggest difference I think from most distros, anotherwords, its built from the ground up as all source. Gentoo has the advantage of letting a newbie or someone who doesn't want to spend much time compiling software start with a precompiled system, or letting the experienced person whow ants to be brave build their system from the bootstrap all the way to simple packages.

This is a very very brief discription since I have a killer headache, and am too tired to really goo into details right now. I would suggest looking at the gentoo website, and checking out the docs for yourself. they will give you a much better explanation then I can currently.
I'm more then willing to answer any questions that you may have.:)

I'm going to brag a little, and say that gentoo has the best docs I've seen so far when it comes to distros. The documentation is clear, and explains a great deal.
