I run fedora on a pentium II with 256mb ram and it runs ok. i used to even have it running on a pentium 133 with 160mb ram and that was still kind of usable. almost anything will run the linux console fine. I started out with a pentium 120 with 16mb ram and it was fine for most things except for compiling software.
