Doug, Maybe a little history will be helpful here. I think it is fair to say that originally the general user was expected to use the tarball and patch the kernel manually with that package. The CVS stuff was originally intended for developers and folks willing to go to the bleeding edge. At some point however version 1.0 reached its ceiling as far as kernel versions went, and the CVS route was the best choice for more current kernels. Maybe at that point the CVS option should have been elevated in prominence on the site, but it remained buried and hard for the newcomer to spot without being clued in by others.
