Hi:

Everything is back to normal.  I won't go into the gory details now as I
have to be up in 3 hours, but what happened was that a rogue script trashed
the bash executable which meant that no-one could login and no scripts
could run.  I eventually managed to copy bash onto the drive, but this was
a difficult process and a couple of things that should have worked, didn't.
