pdf files

The simplest way (if your pdf files aren't locked)
is to mail them as an attachment to
pdf2txt at sun.trace.wisc.edu
If the files are locked, your best bet is to get the source to xpdf and patch pdftotext to ignore the no copy bit,
(which is a matter of removing the appropriate if statement then rebuilding the binaries).
pdftotext does a pretty good job of converting pdf files to text (even without the patch)
and there are xpdf binary packages for most distributions (for the non compiler inclined).
