setting the hardware clock

Maybe your hwclock binary is corrupt?  One thing to try since you said you
are using Slackware is to reinstall the util-linux package.  This contains
several essential utilities including hwclock.  I'd give that a shot.  If
that fails, remove libsafe and try again to use hwclock.  Good luck.
