Hi,
I had a similar problem a while ago.
what I ended up doing was catting the contents of my emty
$HOME/mail/saved-messages to /var/spool/mail/username where username is
the user account that receives yer mail.
that had the folder structure that pine recognizes and I was able to
read new mail from then on.
