I have not heard this about RedHat 8 before ... anyone else? Kevin. ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: [Lbc-announce] Enquiries about a cheap version of Red Hat Linux 8.0 Date: 02 Oct 2002 10:42:54 +0100 From: John Winters <john@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> I've been getting a number of enquiries about when we'll have a cheap version of Red Hat Linux 8.0. Unfortunately, Red Hat have moved the goal posts again. In a surprising move they've completely broken with their previous policy of 100% open source. The new distribution contains a few components which are (C) Red Hat and are *not* freely re-distributable. This has produced surprisingly little comment but the effect is that it's no longer possible to re-distribute copies of the standard download version of Red Hat Linux. For the company that has up to now been the champion of Open Source, it's a major direction change. It's not all bad news though. The problem components are in identified packages and Red Hat have said it's fine to re-distribute as long as they are first removed. I therefore hope that we will be able to do a Threads Linux 8.0. It will no longer be exactly the same as Red Hat, although it will be functionally identical.
