First, you need to build the sasl library cyrus-sasl-1.5.28.tar.gz Once you untar the package you can look at the index.html file in the doc directory. The system admin link gives a basic description of the authentication mechanisms and how to build the library. For my purposes I build only the PLAIN and LOGIN mechanisms because I didn't need the others. Once you've built the library you will need to recompile sendmail to include code to access the sasl library. On that same index.html page, there is link to Sendmail FAQ which is a nice discussion of how to build and test sendmail. Remember that verizon is using the LOGIN mechanism, so that's the one you'll want to enable when you build your sendmail.cf file. I've compiled sendmail-8.11.4.
