serial port not showing on thinkpad

Unfortunately (for you, though only in the short term), the serial
port is either turned off or set to activate by the OS. In order to
make it work properly, you likely as not have to go into your CMOS
setup and tell it to turn your serial port on all the time (as opposed
to off or determined by OS).
