Sorry, I don't have the original thread anymore. I just did a compile of 2.4.19 with speakup patched from today's CVS and with CONFIGURE-SERIAL-CONSOLE not set and it came up talking fine. This is with a speakout hung on ttyS0. Of course, I have CONFIGURE-SERIAL set to Y but the other is not.
