installing debian and windows xp

Hello.
I have a new computer that came configured with windows XP on an ntfs 5
partition, and I wanted to install debian.. I do not wish to format and
repartition.. Instead I want to use partition magic off of a boot floppy to
split the partition.. Will Windows XP notice that the partition is smaller?
It is a 40G HD and I wish to devote about 5 GB to Linux..
What are my options any pointers?
