No. Just entering "mplayer filename.asf" on my system plays the
audio stream fine. But if I run "mplayer -dumpaudio filename.asf"
I get the errors you describe. No switches necessary to just hear
the audio on my system.

I have no idea where to get those font.desc files from. They are
not included with any of the components of the mplayer package
that I have here.

As for installing "X", I have installed X on this system, but it
is not running when I run mplayer. It is not that hard to install
actually, and some applications seem to be more comfortable if
they can find the X libraries. If you have the disk space I would
recommend installing X just for insurance.

Back to mplayer - my config file contains "vo=null" and "ao=oss"
and that is all. And I can play mpg and mpeg files okay, and also
dump their audio okay too. The resulting audio files are mp3. I
have not yet experimented with .avi or other movie formats. The
experimental .asf files I have managed to download are certainly
not playlists, but full fledged native movies with sound track,
video track, and subtitles in multiple languages as far as I can
tell.
