I realise of course that fromdos, dos2unix etc are great, but if they're not present, what's wrong with tr? In case anyone hasn't heard of tr, well it's just great, for all sorts of things, mostly in scripts, but check out the man page, you can do all sorts of stuff, like change the case of characters, remove large amounts of blank space, whatever.
