I find the mpg123 decoding engine sounds better than traplayer, and in fact the mad mpeg decoder sounds better again. Not all mpeg decoders are created equal; and some sound better t han others. Many people claim that sonique sounds better than Winamp which uses the nitrane decoder. Freeamp sounds ok as well; and is more multi-threaded than trplayer. Hopefully when Ogg/Vorbis hits 1.0 and it is more widely adopted we should be able to move onto technology that is better than mp3 is currently and that is free unlike the real networks offerings.
