TWAIN is an interface standard. I don't recall what the acronym is , but
it specifies an interface for three things. Imaging hardware (not just
scanners), software (and drivers) for controlling said hardware, and
programs wishing to call these services. It allows for a program to call
the scanning software directly and then recieve the file back on exit. Or,
it is possible (if the drivers are fully compliant) for the program to
control all scanner functions.
