Thanks for all the recommendations on the HD problem with my friend's computer, most of which concentrated on the jumper configuration. However - Tommy suggested removing the new disk and checking whether the Linux installation ramdisk system can detect the primary master disk, /dev/hda, and it cannot. To repeat a little, the system has Windows 98 on a 12 GB disk and Windows can detect the new 40 GB disk. The only reference to /dev/hdx devices in the ramdisk startup messages is to a CDROM drive on /dev/hdc. I wonder if I should be using a different boot disk besides bare.i? Any further tips would be welcome. Chuck *<<<=-=>>>*<<<=-=>>>*<<<=-=>>>*<<<=-=>>>* Visit me at http://www.mhonline.net/~chuckh The Moon is Waxing Crescent (31% of Full)
